Bathroom Ideas

Most of us have been there, standing in a showroom or scrolling online, confused by all the bathroom cabinet options.

Then we pick something that looks nice, get it home, and realise it doesn't work well in our actual bathroom.

There are so many cabinet styles out there now. Wall-hung, freestanding, mirrored, open shelving.

But after years of helping people with bathroom renovations, we’ve noticed one thing makes the biggest difference to how happy people are with their cabinets long-term.

Picking the right material.

Here's a simple way to choose:

Step 1: Look at your actual bathroom

  • Does your bathroom stay damp for ages after showers?

  • Will the cabinet be right next to the shower?

  • How much direct water is likely to hit it?

Step 2: Know what each material can handle

  • Solid Wood (Oak/Walnut): Oak has natural properties that make it more resistant to bathroom moisture. Walnut contains natural oils that enhance its water resistance and develops a rich patina over time that deepens its distinctive grain pattern.

  • 5G Soft Touch Vinyl: This newer material comes in a wide range of colours including light green, navy, and matt pink, beyond wood finishes. Anti-fingerprint and scratch-resistant properties make it ideal for bathroom settings, with excellent moisture resistance and minimal maintenance required.

  • Laminate: Offers good moisture resistance and comes in various design options. Durable for daily use, though damaged areas cannot be repaired.

Step 3: Be honest about your cleaning habits

  • Have time to wipe down surfaces regularly? Wood can be an excellent choice

  • Want something low maintenance? Go for 5G Soft Touch Vinyl

  • Need something that can handle kids splashing? Stone surfaces offer superior water resistance and are long-lasting.

The right cabinet material makes all the difference between a bathroom that looks great for years and one that deteriorates within months. After seeing hundreds of cabinets professionally installed, we've seen first-hand how material choice can make or break even the most beautiful designs. Making this decision carefully now saves both headaches and renovation costs down the road.
