Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of choosing a freestanding bath?

Freestanding or stand alone baths become the statement piece in every bathroom they find themselves in. But there’s far more to these baths than their unique beauty.

One of the key reasons for their popularity is their variety: freestanding bathtubs come in a range of shapes and sizes. Because of this they can slot into almost any bathroom and style. And because they are freestanding, you have the freedom to place them wherever you like – unlike built-in baths.

Our range of solid stone baths also have the benefit of being smooth to touch and naturally warm – preserving water heat 12 times longer than conventional methods. The use of stone also comes with acoustic benefits: water noise is reduced to enhance the calming ambience baths are loved for.

Simple installation is also a key benefit of standalone baths in most cases, particularly when compared with built-in tubs.

How do I choose the right size and shape of a freestanding bath?

Freestanding bathtubs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, which means they’re very flexible to the specific needs of your bathroom space.

To get the most out of your freestanding bath and to ensure you can clean and maintain it with ease, a good tip is to ideally have 200-300mm of empty space from the tub base on every side – not including the distance to your freestanding taps, if you’ve gone with those.

Can I install a freestanding bath in a small bathroom?

Yes, so long as the bath you’ve chosen can fit into the space you have for it with adequate breathing room – ideally you have 200-300mm of empty space from the base on all sides (not including the distance to your freestanding taps). Once you’ve made sure this is the case, freestanding paths are very easy to install.

It’s important to make sure that your bathroom floor is able to withstand the weight of the bathtub, as freestanding baths can be very heavy. If not, you may need to look into reinforcing your floor.

Are freestanding baths easy to clean and maintain?

This depends on where in your bathroom it's placed and how the plumbing has been configured. If your bathtub has room for you to move around it, cleaning will be very straightforward; if the pipework can be easily accessed, maintenance shouldn’t be a problem either.

At 34 St John, our entire range of freestanding baths are solid stone. Stone is a durable, low maintenance material, making stone baths extremely hard-wearing and long lasting.

Freestanding bathtubs are available in a variety of different materials, with each requiring different cleaning methods.

How do I install a freestanding bath and what tools and materials are required?

Freestanding baths can be very straightforward to install, in most instances even more so than a built-in tub – especially if you’re installing a new bathroom and the pipework has been installed specifically for a freestanding bath.

Plumbing the bathtub – connecting the overflow, trap, waste pipe and tap – remains the same process as with any bath, except if you’re renovating an existing bathroom. In these instances you’ll have to reposition the plumbing, which won’t typically be a simple task.

You’ll need a full plumbing toolkit, including spanners, screwdrivers and a drill and drill bits, and all the necessary piping and pipe fittings. We always recommend that you use the right safety equipment and workwear, too.
