How to choose a Shower Enclosure
Step 1: Consider the type of bathroom you’re buying for – and who will be using it
Is it a family bathroom that will be used by five people, or an en-suite for a couple? If it’s the former it will be used a lot more, so quality and durability are big factors when looking at options – toughened safety glass is a must! And if you’re looking at a smaller en-suite, space-saving designs should be a priority
Step 2: Know your available space
Whether you’re working with a big area or you’re on the smaller side, knowing exactly how much space you have for your new shower enclosure is a must – and don’t forget to also consider the height of the room. Doing this means you’ve also figured out exactly where your enclosure will be in your bathroom.
Step 3: Decide on cubicle or walk-in
The big decision: do you go with a more compact, space efficient shower cubicle, or a roomier walk-in option. Both styles can work in most bathrooms, but available space is still a big factor in this decision.
Types of Shower Enclosures
Sliding Shower Doors
Sliding shower enclosures are a popular choice because they work well in almost every bathroom. They work exactly as they sound – using rollers or rails to easily slide the door open and shut – and come in a wide range of sizes, meaning they’re well suited to both space-conscious and spacious bathrooms.
Walk-in Shower Enclosures
Walk-in shower enclosures offer a more contemporary, minimalist design. With no door, walk-in showers are only separated from the rest of the bathroom by glass panels, which is why you’ll often find them placed between two walls or in a bathroom recess.
Walk-in enclosures can be fitted in most bathrooms, but for those on the smaller side it’s important that you focus on optimising your available space to make it work best.
Hinged Shower Doors
Hinged shower doors work like most doors – they’re hinged on one side – and typically open outwards. This popular option works with every bathroom style, however be sure to check if you’ve got enough space in front of your shower door to open it before installing.
Wet Rooms
Wet rooms are waterproofed showering areas within a bathroom. Popular for the accessibility they provide – especially for people with restricted mobility – wet rooms don’t use the shower screen and tray that most other options do. Wet rooms are available in a wide range of sizes, but tend to work best with more space.
What is the best type of shower enclosure?
The best type of shower enclosure is one that allows its users to shower freely and comfortably, that you can enter and exit with ease, and one that complements and doesn’t restrict the rest of your bathroom.
Based on this, in one smaller bathroom the best type of shower enclosure may use hinged shower doors to save space. In a larger space that has a corner available for a shower, a walk-in design could be a great choice. For bathrooms used by wheelchair users, a wet room would likely be the best fit because it provides accessible entry and exit.
What sizes do shower enclosures come in?
Different types of shower enclosure are available in different size ranges. Walk-in shower enclosures, for example, are available in lengths ranging 900-1400mm; hinged shower doors range from 900mm to 1200mm in length, while sliding shower doors range from 1000mm to 1400mm. Sliding shower enclosures with a door and side panel start at 1000mm and 800mm for the door and side panel respectively, rising to 1400mm x 900mm.
The bigger the shower enclosure, the more spacious the shower will be. But even the 900mm shower enclosures that are on the smaller end of the scale still provide more than sufficient space in most cases.
What is the standard size of a shower enclosure?
Sizes vary based on the type of shower enclosure chosen, but the average size range in a UK household is 700-1700mm in length and 700-900mm in width.
What colour shower cubicles are available?
Chrome plated, black, brushed gold and stainless steel are the finishes available for our walk-in enclosures and our hinged shower doors. Our sliding shower doors and enclosures are available in chrome.
